SACAA FUEL LEVY TO INCREASE
At an industry meeting last week the CAA revealed its new budget to address its forecast deficit.

The Commissioner of Civil Aviation, Mr Colin Jordaan revealed plans to increase the current fuel levy applicable to GA aircraft from 2.1 cents per litre to 12.2 cents per litre.

Whilst the Airlines Association of South Africa, represented by Mr Chris Zweigenthal, welcomed the proposal, GA representatives were unanimous in their concern about the inherent problems that such a drastic increase would bring with it.

Given the declared intent that the airlines should benefit at the expense of GA from this proposal, the writer is perplexed as to how such discrimination will be administered to ensure that the target group is isolated “fairly”.
